The Sermons of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew are central to His teachings and include several key discourses that outline His theological and moral instruction.
- The Mountain Discourse (Matthew 5-7): This is perhaps the most famous of Jesus’ sermons, containing the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and teachings on a wide range of subjects including the law, anger, adultery, divorce, oaths, retaliation, love for enemies, giving to the needy, prayer, fasting, treasures in heaven, not worrying, and judging others.
- The Mission Discourse (Matthew 10): Jesus instructs and sends out the twelve disciples to preach the kingdom of heaven, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, and drive out demons. This sermon includes guidance on how to deal with persecution, the importance of acknowledging Christ before others, and the rewards for those who receive His messengers.
- The Parable Discourse (Matthew 13): Jesus teaches in parables about the kingdom of heaven, using examples such as the Sower, the Weeds among the Wheat, the Mustard Seed, the Yeast, the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Fishing Net. These parables convey the mysteries of the kingdom to those who are prepared to understand them.
- The Community Discourse (Matthew 18): This sermon focuses on the life of the community of believers, addressing issues such as the treatment of “little ones” (a metaphor for disciples), the process of correcting another believer, the parable of the lost sheep, and teachings on forgiveness.
- The Eschatological Discourse (Matthew 23-25): Jesus delivers this sermon on the Mount of Olives, focusing on the last things. It includes prophecies about the destruction of Jerusalem, signs of the end of the age, the need for watchfulness, and parables emphasizing readiness and faithfulness, such as the Ten Virgins, the Talents, and the Sheep and the Goats.
These sermons are foundational to Christian ethics and theology, offering guidance on how to live a life that is pleasing to God, understanding the kingdom of heaven, and preparing for the return of Christ.
