The gift of the Holy Spirit preceded the gifts of the Holy Spirit
- “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'” (Acts 2:38, ESV)
- “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:4)
Somewhat like:
The baptism of John and the baptism of Jesus
- “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11)
- “And Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 19:4-5)
Law and Grace
- “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” (Romans 3:20)”
- For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17, ESV)
Faith and Works
- “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
- “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17)
Physical Circumcision and Spiritual Circumcision
- “This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.” (Genesis 17:10-11)
- “But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.” (Romans 2:29)
Old Covenant and New Covenant
- “In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” (Hebrews 8:13)
- “And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.'” (Luke 22:20)
When we read, be sure that we read carefully.
