The Gospel, Balaam, and Redemption

Introduction: Rare and peculiar events in the scriptures often carry profound significance. There are two times an animal speaks in the Bible. It should signal us to pay close attention. With this principle in mind, let’s delve into the narratives of Genesis 3 and Numbers 22–25, focusing on the enigmatic stories of the serpent and Balaam’s donkey.

Genesis 3 – The Serpent’s Deception: In the Garden of Eden, the crafty serpent engaged Eve in conversation, sowing doubt about God’s command not to eat from a specific tree. This deceitful dialogue led to humanity’s disobedience, resulting in a fallen state. The consequences included separation from God, pain in childbirth, and a cursed relationship between man and the earth. Despite this bleak situation, God’s promise of a coming redeemer could be seen in His declaration that the serpent’s head would be crushed by the woman’s offspring.

Numbers 22–25 – Balaam’s Story: The events recorded from Balaam’s life arise on the heels of fiery serpents. Balaam is confronted with a king’s request to curse Israel. The story intertwines with the theme of serpents, illustrating a pattern where God turns enemies’ schemes against them. The plague of serpents is mitigated by a bronze serpent, akin to how Egypt’s serpents were swallowed by Aaron’s. Balaam, hired to curse Israel, ends up blessing them. Redemption through Jesus: This theme of turning curses into blessings finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. He faced the cross willingly, taking on the curses of sin and death. Just as the serpent bruised Jesus’ heel on the cross, Jesus crushed the serpent’s head by defeating sin and death.
