In response to recent queries about my weekly schedule, I’ve taken a step back to consider how it has developed. Like many young preachers, I initially embraced the “Mondays off” process. However, a suggestion from my brother-in-law Ross led me to explore a different approach, inspired by the book “Preparing the Young Man to Preach by Berry Kercheville.” With that, here’s a breakdown of my refined routine.
Monday to Friday: Departing from the customary “Monday off,” I’ve transitioned into a more focused routine. These weekdays are now dedicated to crafting a daily short article. This practice serves a dual purpose: it hones my writing skills and provides content for my website, www.gospeldefender.com. The subjects covered are diverse, spanning various biblical themes.
Structured Days for Specific Tasks
Sunday: My day starts early with a review of the sermon and class notes to ensure thorough preparedness. In the afternoon, I will return to the notes to address potential updates for further use and insight.
Monday: This day is dedicated to connecting with visitors and members, often leading to appointments during the week.
Tuesday: I focus on preparing for the Wednesday night class, working on class notes and a short primer article to share beforehand.
Wednesday: Attention shifts to readying the Sunday morning Bible Class, refining the content for an impactful session.
Thursday: I set aside this day to prepare the sermon for the upcoming Sunday, aiming for meaningful and powerful messages. I plan out most of the topics for each Sunday during October as we build our congregational themes for the upcoming year.
Friday: As a flexible overflow day, Friday accommodates weekly appointments or meetings.
Saturday: This day is reserved for my family, offering relaxation and quality time with loved ones.
My schedule overhaul significantly influenced my productivity and improved my work-life balance. By streamlining tasks such as writing, sermon preparation, classes, and personal time, I’ve found a practical way to manage my commitments effectively.
How Do You Approach Your Preaching Schedule?
