“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9, ESV)
When Weariness Creeps In
The challenges of life often mirror the struggles faced by farmers, who, due to drought, witness diminished crops, potential bankruptcy, and a sense of discouragement. Similarly, as individuals committed to serving the Lord, we encounter weariness in our well-doing. The metaphor of the farmer, drawn from Galatians 6:7-10, offers us guidance to persist in our endeavors, focusing mainly on verse 9.
The Call to Persevere
In this world, we are presented with a choice: to invest our lives in deeds of goodness or succumb to the allure of evil. As followers of Christ, our purpose is rooted in well-doing. Just as Christ exemplified by His benevolent actions (Acts 10:38), we are divinely ordained for good works (Ephesians 2:10) and urged to maintain them (Titus 1:16; 2:14; 3:1,8). The analogy of limited planting time mirrors the transient nature of opportunities for good works (John 9:4).
The Importance of Perseverance
Our commitment to well-doing carries profound implications. Not only does it glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16) and contribute to the growth of the Church, but it also safeguards our salvation (Philippians 2:12). To surrender to weariness and cease from our efforts yields no reward.
Challenges and Solutions
Several factors can fuel weariness in well-doing. We encounter opposition from a godless world, ingratitude from those we serve, and indifference from potential co-laborers. The enormity of the task and resistance to our plans can discourage us. Results may be disheartening, with new converts falling away and even steadfast members faltering.
Facing Weariness’s Impact
Weariness in well-doing exacts a toll on us. It tempts us to abandon good deeds, plunges us into mental anguish, and triggers spiritual despondency.
Upholding Perseverance
To counter weariness, we must embrace prayer, delve into scripture (Romans 15:4), find solace in the encouragement of fellow believers (Hebrews 10:24-25), and place unwavering trust in God’s providence.
Abounding in the Lord’s Work
As Paul exhorted, let us thrive in the Lord’s work (1 Corinthians 15:58). Recognizing the lure of weariness, let us renew our commitment to the Lord’s mission with fervor. In a world where weariness seeks to prevail, our dedication to well-doing becomes a testament to our faith and resilience.
