Human sexuality has long been a subject of discussion and debate throughout history, and it continues to spark controversy in various cultures and religious circles today. Among those who seek a connection with God through Christ, a complex relationship exists with sexuality, and interpretations of what constitutes moral or immoral behavior vary.
The teachings of Jesus regarding sexuality can be predominantly found in the Gospels, where He frequently addresses matters concerning marriage and adultery. In Matthew 5:27-28, Jesus extends the commandment against adultery to encompass not just the act itself but the thoughts and desires of one’s heart. He emphasizes the significance of purity and self-control in our innermost thoughts.
Moreover, in Mark 10:6-9, Jesus underscores the sacred nature of marriage, stating that God created humanity as male and female, and that a man and woman becoming one flesh in marriage is a divine union that should not be severed. This teaching reaffirms the importance of fidelity and commitment within a monogamous heterosexual relationship.
The apostle Paul also addresses sexual ethics in his teachings. In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Paul urges believers to flee from sexual immorality, emphasizing that sexual sins are distinct as they affect one’s own body, which is a temple of the Holy Spirit. He reminds us that we do not belong to ourselves but have been purchased by God at a great price, urging us to honor God with our bodies.
Paul continues to provide guidance on matters of marriage and sexuality in 1 Corinthians 7. While he acknowledges the value of marriage, he also recognizes that singleness can be a legitimate and even preferable choice for some individuals, reflecting the diversity of human experiences and callings.
It is essential to recognize that while the Bible’s teachings on sexuality align with God’s holiness, the cultures depicted in the Bible do not always align with this message. Thus, it is crucial to carefully discern the principles from Jesus’ teachings and the writings of His disciples. These principles include upholding sexual purity, recognizing the sanctity of the human body, valuing commitment and fidelity within the institution of marriage, and acknowledging that singleness can be a valid and fulfilling life choice for some.
